One of the most important things to consider when designing a logo is where and how it will be used. Most logos go on a sign, an ad, business cards, invoices, shirts, etc. It needs to be legible both very large and very small. It needs to work well in black and white and in color. It needs to be able to be printed, screen printed and web friendly. A logo is one of the most important designs your business needs in terms of marketing. When I approach a logo design, I consider every aspect of how the logo will be used and how it will be produced. I also look at the competitors designs and make sure they are not similar. If there are any brand partners, I also want the logo to have a cohesive look and feel.
What do you do when one of your dearest childhood friends contacts you regarding logo design for their 40+ year family business? Well, I can tell you what I did, I created over 23 versions and overwhelmed them with options! (Actually I don’t think I sent all 23 options, that would be mean!) The direction I got was for the logo to look clean, safe and friendly and include a German Shepherd and Dachshund if possible. No color preferences, shapes or anything else. Sometimes jobs like this are a dream because the client gives you such freedom in design. Sometimes it creates confusion because there are just too many options (too many cute animals!!!) We worked on the logo for a good part of 2019 and took our time nailing down a good solid logo that they are happy with. I enjoyed this project immensely and had so much fun looking at pet pictures and other logos for inspiration.
